VBAC: The Importance of a Supportive Provider

Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) is an experience many parents who have previously had a cesarean section desire. While VBAC is a safe and viable option for many, it is imperative to find a healthcare provider who is not just tolerant but supportive of your decision.

A supportive provider will answer your questions, address your concerns, and help you make informed decisions about your care. They will also be more likely to respect your birth plan and support you during your labor.

Here are some of the benefits of having a supportive provider for VBAC:

  • Increased confidence: When you have a provider who believes in you and your ability to have a vaginal birth, it can boost your confidence and help you feel more empowered during labor.

  • Reduced stress: A supportive provider can help to reduce your stress levels by answering your questions and providing reassurance. This can lead to a more positive and relaxed birth experience.

  • Improved outcomes: Studies have shown that parents who have supportive providers are far more likely to have successful VBACs.

How to find a supportive provider:

  • Ask for referrals: Talk to your friends, family, and other parents who have had VBACs. They may be able to recommend a provider who is supportive of VBAC.

  • Interview potential providers: When you interview potential providers, be sure to ask them about their experience with VBACs, their philosophy of care, and how they would support you during your labor.

  • Trust your gut: Ultimately, you need to find a provider who you feel comfortable with and who you trust to support you throughout your VBAC journey.

Additional tips for a successful VBAC:

  • Educate yourself about VBAC: The more you know about VBACs, the more confident you will feel about your decision.

  • Find a doula: A doula can provide emotional and physical support during labor.

  • Prepare your birth plan: Having a birth plan can help you communicate your wishes and your expectations to your provider.

  • Relax and trust your body: Labor can be a long and challenging process, but it is important to relax and trust your body to do what it is meant to do.

In addition to the tips above, here are some specific questions you can ask potential providers:

  • What is your experience with VBACs?

  • What is your philosophy of care for VBACs?

  • What are your views on pain management during labor?

  • What are your policies on induction and augmentation of labor?

  • What is your approach to monitoring the baby during labor?

  • Do you have a "time limit" for "failure to progress" before you suggest a cesarean birth?

  • Are you supportive of me having a Doula?

By asking these questions, you can get a better sense of a provider's approach to VBACs, whether or not they are a good fit for you, and if they are TRULY supportive of VBACs.

Remember, VBAC is a safe and viable option for many women. With the right support, you can achieve your goal of a vaginal birth.
